The event is free for ages 5 and younger parking is $8. Tickets to the art and crafts halls and outdoor food booths only are $7 a day, available at the fairgrounds a combined ticket for the vendors' area and the (indoors) hula competition is $12, available online and at the fairgrounds. This year's judges - always some of the most revered names in the field - are Leina'ala Kalama Heine ("Aunty 'Ala"), the kumu hula of Hālau Na Pualei O Likolehua on the Big Island and a featured dancer for the Brothers Cazimero Mae Kamamalu Klein ("Aunty Mae"), another kumu who has trained many of the next generation of teachers and Kunewa Mook, kumu of the award-winning Hula Hālau 'O Kamuela 'Elua, based in Burbank (and the voice of the hula master in "Lilo & Stitch.") Renowned scholar and songwriter Puakea Nogelmeier returns to judge the Hawaiian language category and Hau'oli Akaka repeats as MC (part crowd-shusher, part font of knowledge and part merrymaker, as hau'oli suggests.) The festival, which runs through Sunday, features dancers from a baker's dozen of hula hālau from California and Oahu, performing with live musicians soloists take the stage tonight, with group numbers starting tomorrow.
